How to get your activity files

FitMerge works on the files your device or app recorded. Here is where each platform keeps them.

Which format? FIT first, then TCX, then GPX. FIT keeps laps, power, pauses and your head unit's identity, so Strava and Garmin Connect treat the merged activity like any other. Export Original on Strava and Export File on Garmin Connect give you the file exactly as recorded, usually FIT. Downloads that come as .zip or .gz can be dropped in as they are. You need one file per part of the activity, and you can mix formats: a FIT from the watch or head unit and a GPX from the phone merge fine.
FIT (original) · GPX · TCX

Strava

On the website. The Strava phone app has no file export.

  1. Open strava.com in a browser, sign in and open the activity.
  2. Click the three-dots button (⋯) in the column on the left, below the activity's title.
  3. Choose Export Original for the file your device uploaded. If it isn't offered, choose Export GPX or Export TCX.
  4. Do the same for the other part of the activity.

Delete the two originals on Strava before you upload the merged activity, or Strava may reject the upload as a duplicate. The Strava guide has every step.

FIT (original, zipped) · TCX · GPX

Garmin Connect

On the website. The Connect phone app has no file export; the site works in a phone browser too.

  1. Open connect.garmin.com, sign in and open the activity.
  2. Click the gear icon in the top right of the activity page.
  3. Choose Export File (older layouts: Export Original). The original FIT file may arrive inside a .zip; drop it straight into FitMerge.
  4. Export to TCX or Export to GPX are there as well if you need those formats.

If the gear icon is missing on a phone, ask the browser for the desktop version of the site. The Garmin Connect guide covers the import as well.

FIT

Garmin device over USB

Edge, Forerunner, fēnix and other Garmin units, straight from the device.

  1. Connect the device to a computer with its USB cable and let it finish starting up.
  2. Open it like a drive. Windows shows it in Explorer. On a Mac, older units mount as a drive; newer ones need an MTP app such as OpenMTP, or use the Garmin Connect website instead.
  3. Open Garmin/Activities (on watches it may be GARMIN/Activity).
  4. Copy the .fit files of the activity. They are named by date and time, so the two parts sit next to each other.

Copy the files, don't move them, so the device keeps its own history.

FIT

Wahoo ELEMNT

In the ELEMNT companion app on your phone.

  1. Open the ELEMNT app and go to History.
  2. Open the ride and tap the share icon.
  3. Choose the .fit file and save it to Files, send it with AirDrop, or email it to yourself.

Older ELEMNT and BOLT units also show up as a drive on a computer, with the rides in the export folder. If the app auto-uploads to Strava or Dropbox, the files are there too.

FIT

Hammerhead Karoo

On the Hammerhead dashboard website.

  1. Sign in at dashboard.hammerhead.io.
  2. Open Rides and open the ride. Rides sync from the Karoo whenever it is online.
  3. Use the ride's export option to download the FIT file.

If the Karoo uploads to Strava for you, Export Original there gives the same file.

FIT

Zwift

On zwift.com, or from the Zwift folder on your computer.

  1. Sign in at zwift.com, open your activity feed and open the activity.
  2. Use the activity's download option to save the FIT file.
  3. On a computer the files are also saved locally in Documents/Zwift/Activities, named by date and time.

Indoor rides and runs have no GPS, which is fine: FitMerge still merges time, distance, power and heart rate, and you download FIT or TCX.

FIT · TCX · GPX

COROS

In the COROS phone app, or on the COROS Training Hub website.

  1. Open the COROS app and open the activity.
  2. Tap the ⋯ or share icon in the top right and choose Export Data.
  3. Pick FIT (TCX and GPX are offered as well) and save or share the file.
FIT · TCX · GPX

Polar

On the Polar Flow website. The Flow phone app has no file export.

  1. Open flow.polar.com, sign in and open the session from the Diary.
  2. Click Export in the top right of the session page.
  3. Pick FIT (TCX, GPX and CSV are offered as well). A zipped download is fine too.

FIT and TCX carry heart rate and cadence; GPX is the route only.

FIT · GPX

Suunto

In the Suunto phone app.

  1. Open the Suunto app and open the workout.
  2. Tap ⋯ in the top right and choose the export format.
  3. Pick FIT and save or share the file.

GPX is offered only for workouts with GPS and leaves some data out, so take FIT.

GPX only

Komoot

On komoot.com or in the app, for tours you recorded.

  1. Open the completed tour.
  2. Open the ⋯ menu and choose Download GPX (in the app: Export as GPX).

Komoot's GPX has the route, times and elevation but no heart rate or power. If the activity also reached Strava or Garmin Connect, export the original there instead.

FIT · GPX · TCX via another app

Apple Watch and iPhone

The Fitness app cannot export a workout file, so take one of two routes.

  1. If the workout synced to Strava, export it from Strava.
  2. Otherwise use an app that reads Apple Health, such as HealthFit or RunGap: open the workout and share it as a FIT file (GPX and TCX also work).
Look for FIT, then TCX, then GPX

Other apps and devices

Nearly every app has an export in the activity's ⋯ or share menu.

  1. Bryton Active, iGPSPORT, Magene, XOSS and similar apps: open the ride, tap share or export, and pick FIT if it is offered.
  2. Any activity that reached Strava or Garmin Connect: export the original there, whatever recorded it.

Got both files?

Drop them on the home page, in any order. The map and the before-and-after table show what the merged activity looks like before you download it.
